Ever wondered why some whiskies feel light and floral while others are rich and heavy? The answer lies in...
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to sharpen your palate, Proof & Purpose is your guide to the six major spirits and the stories they tell through flavor, history, and craft.

I’ve always been driven by curiosity, the kind that looks past the surface to ask better questions. That mindset led me to explore the world of spirits and wine in greater depth, earning several industry certifications along the way. But I didn’t stop there.
With an education in engineering and a career that’s taken me from military service to corporate finance, I’ve learned to appreciate structure, precision, and how systems work.
Proof & Purpose was born out of my desire to make sense of what’s in the glass. Not just what it tastes like, but why it tastes that way. My goal is to help everyday people gain a deeper, practical understanding of distilled spirits, without the snobbery, jargon, or gatekeeping.
If you’ve ever read a label and felt more confused than confident, this site, and this book, were made with you in mind.
Discover the stories, traditions, and flavors that make each spirit unique. My free guide, Foundations of Flavor, is the perfect starting point, a concise introduction that highlights the six major categories of distilled spirits. When you’re ready to go deeper, my full-length book Proof & Purpose offers an in-depth exploration designed to educate and inspire curious drinkers at every level.

The New Map of Whisky looks at how the category has outgrown the map we once relied on. For centuries, four regions shaped the entire conversation. Today, distillers across other continents are redefining what the spirit can be.
This book examines that shift with a focus on craft, not hype. It follows the same fundamentals, grain, fermentation, distillation, cask choices, and climate, but shows how each region interprets them differently. The result is a clearer understanding of why whiskies from new parts of the world taste the way they do and how those decisions reflect their environment and culture. It’s an invitation to see the modern whisky world with context, structure, and a sense of how far the craft has traveled.
